I wonder if it‘s possible …

… to cross Europe from its northernmost to its southernmost point, only by bike.

The European mainland reaches from the 36th to the 71th parallel and is bounded by the Barents Sea in the north as well as the Mediterranean Sea in the south. There are two extreme points:

The North Cape

Contrary to popular belief, the North Cape is not the northernmost point of Europe. The Cape is located on the Norwegian island Magerøya and is therefore not part of the European mainland.

However, being connected to the continent by a road tunnel, it is the northernmost point to be reachable by the European road network – even about four kilometers (2,5 miles) further north than the northernmost tip of Europe, Kinnarodden. The northernmost promontory of the North-Cape-Island is situated at 71° 11′ 8″ northern hemisphere which makes it only 2100 km (1300 miles) distant to the North Pole.

The Punta de Tarifa

The counterpart to the North Cape is located in Spain‘s southern part, Andalusia. Being situated about 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Gibraltar, the Punta de Tarifa forms the southern tip of the same-named town of Tarifa and also the southernmost point of the European mainland. Located at the narrowest part of the Strait of Gibraltar, not more than 14 km (8,5 miles) this divides Europe from the African continent.

Offshore there is also a little island – the Isla de la Palomas – which can be reached via a small footbridge. Dividing the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea, the southern tip of this island reaches exactly to the 36th parallel. However, the island is a prohibited military-zone and may therefore not be accessed by public.

The rules

The European continent shall be crossed from its northernmost to its southernmost reachable point on an unbroken route. The whole journey shall be travelled with only a bicycle (mountainbike) implemental. That said, locomotion by foot is not ruled out (as planned for a short section in Lapland) and also wheeling the bike is allowed (for technical, not for conditional reasons!).
Other means of traffic may be used to get to points of interest but not to make progress on the route.

To me this journey is not about rapidity, but about getting to know new countries and sights.
My route does, therefore, not cross my home country of Germany and does not follow the easiest, but the most interesting paths.

The distance of almost 9000 km (5590 miles) as well as the logistical effort of crossing 13 European states in total (different languages, currency, visa appointments) shall be managed all by myself.

I will update this Homepage with blog entries (in German) and pictures to keep you guys current on my journey.

My schedule

My airplane to the North Cape takes off the 8th of June 2012. Generally, I have set no time limit to my journey, however I figure on four months of duration.

Along my route I will pass through several big cities, where I will pause and take some days off for sightseeing. As four months all on one‘s lonesome can be pretty tough and lonely, it would be nice to meet some known faces off and on. So, if any of you occasionally might be in one of the below-mentioned cities at the stated time, or knows somebody who is – I would be very happy, if you contacted me (steffen.grabenhof@hotmail.com). I am, of course, always delighted to get accommodation offers, but even only to have someone to guide me around town is a big help for me. Thank you for your efforts!
